ADS celebrates Jerusalem Day

Written By Senior Living by Youngstown Area Jewish Federation

Adult Day Services at Heritage Manor recently celebrated Jerusalem day with Liron Daniel, Youngstown Area Jewish Federation Israel engagement/program coordinator.

Participants learned about the history and significance of Jerusalem Day, what is celebrated on this day, why it is important, and how its message continues to connect to lives today.

Jerusalem Day commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem under Jewish sovereignty in 1967 following the Six Day War. The 1967 victory marked the first time in thousands of years that all of Jerusalem came under Jewish control. It also allowed Jews access to the holiest parts of the city, especially the Western Wall, a remnant of the ancient Temple.

Participants took part in a meaningful tradition inspired by the Western Wall. Just as visitors place notes with prayers and wishes into the cracks of the Wall, participants wrote their own hopes and wishes on small notes and attached them to a model Western Wall that they created together.

They also watched someone sing “Jerusalem of Gold,” which captures the spirit and significance of Jerusalem.

The program concluded with an open discussion and Q&A session. “Participants showed great interest, asking thoughtful questions about Jerusalem Day, Israel, and the current security situation,” said Daniel. “The conversation was engaging and meaningful, reflecting the group’s curiosity and desire to learn more.”
